Switching From Cotton to Satin? What to Expect

Moonveil satin pillowcase, eye mask, hair band and hair tie on a bed

Thinking about trading your cotton pillowcase for satin? Here is what changes, in short.

  • The feel. Satin is smooth, slippery and cool when you first lie down. Cotton is soft, matte and more textured.
  • Your hair. Hair tends to glide over satin instead of catching, so many people notice less tugging, and styles like heatless curls keep their shape a little better by morning.
  • Laundry. Wash satin cold on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag, hang it to dry and skip the bleach. Cotton is easier: machine wash and dry.
  • Hot sleepers. Cotton breathes well. Polyester satin can feel warmer over a whole night for some people. Plenty of people keep one of each.

One thing to know: satin is a weave, often polyester, not silk. For a full side-by-side of satin, silk and cotton, including price and care, read satin vs silk vs cotton pillowcases in the Dewmoire Journal.
